How to download an audio book from OverDrive and transfer it to your iPod in 15 easy steps!

How to download a digital audiobook from Overdrive and put it on your iPod

Step-by-step!

Step 1:  Go to www.durhamlibrary.org, scroll down until you see on the left side a small banner that says "download audiobooks ebooks Overdrive" and click on it.

Step 2: On the left side under the heading "Getting Started" click on "Quick Start Guide"

Step 3:  On the next page is a guide to getting started.  Read it over, then click on "To download and install OverDrive Media Console, click here"  Download and install the software.

Step 4:  After downloading and installing the software, you can pick out which book you would like to download.  If you are still on the Quick Start Guide, you can click on "Search" at the top of the page, or type in the author or title you are looking for in the "Quick Search" box.
You can also browse the available books by scrolling down to the Audiobooks header, and clicking on the area which you are interested in.
For example, let's say we want to browse the young adult audio books.  Click on "Young Adult Fiction."

Step 5:  Let's pick a book!  The page you see now shows the list of audio books available.  Pay attention to the icons underneath each title which tell you where it can be played.  PC and Mac tell you if the book can be played on that kind of computer.  Burn to CD means that you are able to burn this audio book to a CD.  WMA means that you can play it on mp3 players that support DRM-protected WMA content.  iPod means you can play it on your iPod, and MP3 means that it can only be used on MP3 players that support DRM-protected WMA content, or on iPod®/iPhone®/iPad™ via OverDrive Media Console for Windows (v3.2 or newer).
The next thing you want to notice is what it says all the way to the right of the other information.  It will either say "Add to Cart" or "Request/Hold" and "Add to Wish List."  Add to Cart means that item is available right now for you to download.  However if it says Request/Hold, then you will have to wait for it become available until you can download it.  I know you're probably saying to yourself, why do I have to wait for a digital audio book?  Well the reason is that Overdrive only has a certain number of licenses for each title, so that title could be entirely 'checked out' just like a regular physical audio book!
Anyway, so pick a book you'd like to download and listen to, and click "Add to Cart."  (If it's available, that is.  For the sake of these instructions, I'm going to assume that is what you are picking.)  For me, I'm going to download Secret Vampire by L.J. Smith.

Step 6:  Download it!  At this point you will see your Cart.  You can add more items, or go ahead and download this one now.  I'm going to just get this book for now.  Click on "Proceed to Checkout."

Step 7: Sign in.  You'll need your library card number.  Type it into the box, then click login.

Step 8: Onward... to the Check Out page!  On this page you'll see some important information.  Take note of the Lending Period and the Important Notes underneath.  When you've read all that, click "Confirm Checkout."

Step 9: Download your file.  On this page you can begin the actual download of your audio book.  If you did not download the necessary software earlier, you can click the link on this page to get it.  Otherwise, click the "Download this title" button.

Step 10:  A download window will popup.  Choose "Open with OverDrive Media Console," which should be the default action, and click Ok.

Step 11: Next the OverDrive Media Console program will popup and will ask you where you want the file saved.  The default folder will be filled in, but by following the "Note" below you can change the default folder.  Click OK when you are ready to continue.

Step 12: The Download window asks you which parts you would like to download.  Most of the time you will be selecting them all, however, if your audio book expired before you finished it, you could be downloading just part 5, or 4 and 5.  Right now though, we're going make sure all parts are checked and click OK.

Step 13: Wait.  Your book is downloading.  You can see the progress in the bottom bar of the window.

Step 14: After you are done downloading, you have your choice of how you would like to listen to the book.  You can simply click "Play" and listen to it right on your computer, click "Transfer" to transfer to your audio device like a MP3 player or iPod, or "Burn" to burn the files to a disk(s).  I'm putting my book on my iPod, so I'll click Transfer.

Step 15: The Transfer Wizard window will popup.  Now is the time to connect your device and then click "Next."  Follow the rest of the directions on the Transfer Wizard to transfer your audio book to your iPod, then it's as simple as putting in your headphones and listening.  I hope you enjoy!
