Volunteer at the Durham Public Library this Summer!

If you are between the ages of 12-18 and looking to fill your free time  this summer, then consider joining the Library Volunteen Program.  Volunteens work the Summer Reading Desk by helping patrons register and record books; handing out prizes; and performing other various jobs in a lively environment.

Summer Volunteens earn community service hours for their hard work, and celebrate together with their own special end-of-summer party.  Volunteens who work at least six hours will receive a gift bag, water bottle, and ear buds.

Summer Volunteen Registration Starts Tuesday, May 31st.

Volunteens are needed to work at the Summer Reading Desk from June 27th through August 6th.

The Summer Volunteen Picnic is scheduled for
Friday, August 12th from 2-3pm.

To sign up for this program, you simply have to come into the Library and register in our Summer Volunteer binder.  Everything is set up on a table right when you walk in and you get to choose your own hours.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM =)

Listen up, guys and gals, cause I have some very important ice cream related news.

Who - Young Adults ages 12-18 / in grades 7-12
What - Ice Cream Social to discuss the formation of a Teen Advisory Group for the library
When - Tuesday August 16th @ 7:00pm
Where - Durham Public Library
Why?

This yummy event is an interest meeting for the Teen Advisory Group.  We don't have one yet, but we sure are going to have one!

What does a Teen Advisory Group (TAG) do?
Well, TAG can do lots of things!  They can suggest books or other materials for the library, hold fundraisers, decorate the teen area, or make any other suggestions on how to improve the library for teens, and everyone else!  Basically, it will a place for you to have your ideas heard.

TAG would be a great extracurricular activity for many teens, it could count as community service, volunteer work, and it would look great on a college application!

So, I hope your interested.  If your not sure, why not just come for the ice cream?  You can talk if you want to, but you sure don't have to.  (Also, please don't talk if your mouth is full of ice cream)

After the social, TAG will meet once a month and there will always be a yummy snack for you growing boys and girls.  You won't have to register for those meetings, but you must register for the ice cream social.  The reason for this is, well, I have to know how much ice cream and toppings and what not to buy!

Ok, you'll find the sign up sheet at the front desk.  Or, you could call the library to register or email me.  See you soon!

Calling all volunteens~

So, recently I blogged about needing volunteens to man the summer reading desk and you guys and girls have really stepped up!  I have lots of volunteers and lots of the hours covered.  However I do have some blank spots on next week's schedule.  And since next week is our first week, its going to be a busy one!  My goal is have someone covering that desk at every hour, with no blank spaces!  Anyhoo, here are the hours I need people next week:

Monday  2:00-3:00
Tuesday  10:00-12:00, 5:00-5:30
Wednesday 12:00-1:00, 3:00-4:00
Thursday 10:00-12:00, 2:00-7:00
Friday 1:30-3:00
Saturday 10:00-11:00, 2:00-5:00

Remember, you don't need to just work the exact hours I have listed here.  For example, if you can volunteer on Tuesday from 4 to 6, that would cover my empty spot from 5-5:30 and I would be very happy.  So, if you could come in to work at the Summer Reading desk for any of these hours next week, please come in and sign up in the white volunteen binder!  Remember, 6 hours and you get a tshirt and a pizza party in August!

Questions?  You can comment here with them, call the library, or email me, Miss Gardiner at kgardiner@durhamlibrary.org

Volunteering this summer at the Summer Reading Desk

Hi guys and gals~

I know I told you before all about the Teen Summer Reading programs that are going on this summer, but I have even MORE for you to do this summer (If you're not busy enough already!)

I'm talking about volunteering.  We need teens ages 12 and up to man our summer reading desk.  At the desk you will be:
  • Registering the patrons that want to sign up (children, other young adults, and adults)
  • Keeping track of our summer reading statistics
  • Preparing craft kits for future story times
If you volunteer for at least 6 hours you will get a t-shirt and be invited to our end of summer Volunteen Pizza Party!  (August 9th, 6:00pm)

Excited?  Ready to sign up?  Dying to know how?  Head on over to the library and next to the normal program registration binder you will find a binder for the Summer Volunteens.  Inside you'll need to write in your contact information (name, phone number) and your tshirt size.  Then you'll fill in on the schedule inside what days and times you would like to volunteer your time.  There are also some of the children's programs that we need some extra help for, and those sign up sheets are in the binder as well.

There are some restrictions (aren't there always)
  • You can bring along a friend with you when you volunteer, but no more than 3 people are allowed to work at the desk at once.
  • You may volunteer a maximum of 5 hours a day, 20 hours a week, and 4 days per week.
  • You may not work a split shift in a day (you can work 10-2, but you can not work 10-12 and 6-8 in one day)
  • If you can't make it to the day you're sign up to work, then please call us ASAP so we can get a substitute for you
Have any questions?  Feel free to comment on here with them, call the library, or email me
My email address is kgardiner@durhamlibrary.org

Well, I hope to see many of you soon signing up to be a Summer Volunteen.  Remember to open up that white binder at the desk and fill in what's needed!  See you soon~

WHEW~  I told you it was a lot!  Not to mention, I have EVEN MORE to offer you.  We are going to need volunteers ages 12 and up to staff the summer reading desk in the library, every day, every hour that we are open.  Volunteens at the summer reading desk will help children, young adults, and adults sign up for the summer reading program, log the books they have read, enter them in the weekly drawings (teens and adults) and give out the kids coupons.  In your spare time at the desk you can read or make craft kits for future story times.  Log 6 hours of community service at the library this summer doing this and you get a t-shirt, and an invite to the Summer Reading Volunteen Party on August 9th at 6:00pm.  We'll eat pizza, listen to music, and probably play some games.  I hope I see you there!

Well that's my info on the summer reading program.  I hope you're getting excited, because I know I am.  Don't forget the important date to remember is June 27th.  That's the first day that you can start to sign up for the various programs and start participating in the reading program.  Stop in the library and talk to me if you're interested in volunteering at the desk.
