All about Badges!

You may have seen that teens have the opportunity to earn extra raffle tickets this summer by earning BADGES.  But just what are these mysterious badges?  Well they're kind of like summer reading achievements.  You earn them by doing your normal things, and some not so normal things.  


There are 4 types of badges.

Reading Badges



There are 31 different reading-related badges
  1. 60 minutes - Finish 1st hour
  2. 120 minutes - Finish 2nd hour
  3. 180 minutes - Finish 3rd hour
  4. tenth of a day! - Finish 4th hour
  5. The 300 - Finish 5th hour
  6. Full Circle - Finish 6th hour
  7. 420 minutes - Finish 7th hour
  8. Third of a day! - Finish 8th hour
  9. 540 minutes - Finish 9th hour
  10. 600 minutes - Finish 10th hour

Teen Book Review - Point Blank

Point Blank by Anthony Horowitz - YA ACT HOR
This review is from Zachary, age 12.  Zachary says that this book is fiction and action/adventure.  He gave it a 9/10. (Nearly perfect!) His favorite character was Alex. Zachary said "I enjoyed how well the book was written and all of the fast paced action that left you at the edge of your seat."  About the cover of the book Zachary had this to say, "I liked how it was glossy." Teen Book Review - The Fault in our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - YA FIC GRE

This review is from Samantha, age 16.  Samantha says that this book is fiction.  She gave it a 10/10. (Impressive!) Her favorite character was Augustus. Samantha said "The Fault in Our Stars was funny and cute.  It incorporated a love story, yet it wasn't stupid or too romancey.  It brings you on a whirlwind of emotions."  About the cover of the book Samantha had this to say, "Not my favorite, but still good." Teen Book Review - A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks - FIC SPA
This review is from Catherine, age 15.  Catherine says that this book is fiction, romance, and a "tear-jerker."  She gave it a 7.5/10. (Specific!) Her favorite character was Landon. (It's such a romance novel name, isn't it?)  Catherine said "This book is sweet and romantic.  It's heartfelt characters feel real and the story is a touching tear-jerker.  The only bad thing I would say is it's a little slow."  About the cover of the book Catherine had this to say, "It could be better.  The one I got was the movie characters, but the other cover is really cool." She said that she would absolutely would read more from this author and her last words were "The movie is totally different from the book.  So just because you hated the movie doesn't mean you'll hate the book."  (Good advice for ANY book to movie!)

Melanie said "I haven't read this book in so long, I just know that I liked and still do.  It's a true story about a horse from Assateague, where wild horses lived."  About the cover of the book Melanie had this to say, "Well it has a horse on it which is mandatory." She said that she would probably would read more from this author and her last words were "It had a sequel."  (It's called Misty's Twilight)

Teen Book Review - Wings

Wings by Aprilynne Pike - YA PAR PIK
This review is from Jessica, age 13.  Jessica says that this book is fiction, fantasy, action/adventure, mystery and romance.  She gave it a 10/10. (this book gets about a 11 out of 10 from me! I love it!) Her favorite character was Laurel, Tamini, and David. (couldn't decide, I guess!) Jessica said "I liked this book because it had a lot of action.  Also the main character just figures out that she isn't human."  About the cover of the book Jessica had this to say, "It had flower petal wings on it" (a big clue for the plot) She said that he would probably would read more from this author (there are 3 more books in this series!) and she didn't have any last words for us!

(not my fave!) He said that he would probably would read more from this author (plenty of Alex Cross books!) and his last words were "MUST READ for fans of the mystery/thriller genre."

Teen Book Review - Akira (vol 2)

(YES!  I love that someone wrote a manga review!  I just recently got into manga) This review is from Hannah, age 13.  Hannah says that this book is a graphic novel.  She gave it a 8/10. Her favorite character was Kaneda.  Hannah said "The book has a pretty interesting plot: of two boys living in Neo-Tokyo, a city built on ashes left behind from the explosions that triggered World War III.  The only reason I didn't rate this book higher is sometimes it can be hard to tell the characters apart, a many are a bit similarly drawn."  About the cover of the book Hannah had this to say, "IT previews the book nicely: you can tell there's going to be some action in parts of it."  She said that she would read more from this author and she didn't have any last words.

Teen Book Review - The Lucky One

This review is from Clare, age 17.  Clare says that this book is fiction and romance.  She gave it a 10/10. (Must be swoony!) Her favorite character was Logan.  Clare said "I love everything Nicholas Sparks writes and The Lucky One is no exception - it's actually one of my favorites.  I was captured when I read it by its realism and by it's mysticism.  It's a story of a man, guided by fate or destiny, who finds where he is supposed to be, and what he's really meant for."  About the cover of the book Clare had this to say, "All Nicholas Spark's books give little clues about them - Always pretty."  She said that she would (and obviously has!) read more from this author and her last words were "You'd be lucky to read this book."  (HAH!  I get it.)

Teen Book Review - The Spellman Files

Her favorite character was Henry Stone.  Melanie said "It's the funniest book I've read (given I haven't read many comedic novels, but still) it has great jokes, a great plot, and you will fall in love with Izzy Spellman."  About the cover of the book Melanie had this to say, "It was the reason I spooted it and it's very fun."  (I like it too, cute!) She said that she would (and has!) read more from this author and her last words were "There are five 'documents' of the Spellman Files."  (Great advice Melanie!)

Her favorite character was Miranda.  Erin said "The description and vocabulary used was spectacular.  It was also a page turner!"  (No arguments here!) About the cover of the book Erin had this to say, "The book cover didn't really grab my attention."  (It is a bit boring, isn't it?) She said that she would read more from this author (You're in luck, there are two more in this series!) and her last words were "GREAT! 5 stars!"

Teen Book Review - Skulduggery Pleasant

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy - YA SFF LAN
 This review is from Seamus, age 12.  Seamus says that this book is fantasy.  He gave it a 10/10.  (Wow Seamus, I'm glad you loved it!)  His favorite character was Skulduggery. (of course!)  He said "It had alot of action and magic and there was a skeleton with a gun, nothing gets better."  I don't think anyone's gonna disagree with you about that Seamus!  About the cover of the book he had this to say, "It didn't tell much, which is good."  Seamus said that he would read more from this author and his last words were "One of the best ever."  Who could resist a gun toting, fireball throwing, walking, talking skeleton?

Teen Book Review - iBoy

iBoy by Kevin Brooks - YA SFF BRO

 This review is from Daanyal, age 12. Daanyal says that this book is science fiction.  He gave it an 8/10.  (Awesome!)  His favorite character was Lucy. He said "Well this book is meant for mature readers like in teens.  For me, it was great because of the action.  There are many pieces of language in this book not suitable for children." (That's some great advice Daanyal, thanks for letting us know!)  About the cover of the book he had this to say, "The cover did not have anything to do with the story." (Oh well!  Sometimes that happens.  Did you know that most of the time the author doesn't have any power over what goes on the cover of their book?  Most of the time it a decision made by the publisher of the book.) Daanyal said that he would not read more from this author.

He said "I liked this book because it was very suspenseful and shared all the different characters opinions and points of view."  About the cover of the book he had this to say, "It makes me wonder who the character is." Teen Book Review - Catching Fire

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - YA SFF COL

This review is from Isabella, age 11.  Isabella says that this book is fiction, action/adventure, and romance.  She gave it a 9/10.  (Nice!)  Her favorite character was Katniss Everdeen. She said "Catching Fire is a great book!  In this sequel to The Hunger Games Katniss and Peeta get dragged back into the games and they meet old Victors but this time there will be no exceptions-there will only be one victor."  (That is a really great description of the book, nice job Isabella!)  About the cover of the book she had this to say, "It's a perfect fit with the title and story!" Isabella said that she would read more from this author (Of course!) and her last words were "If you liked the first book you will love Catching Fire!" Totes agreed!
